Remembering Hank Jones

Hank Jones, the eldest of the "Jones Brothers" from Pontiac, Michigan has passed away at the age of 91. Hank was born in Mississippi, his musical family moved to Pontiac, where he spent his youth & cut his chops on the Detroit Jazz scene. Hank was known for his eloquent & lyrical style of piano playing. And, during his career in jazz he won many of the highest awards. Hank Jones was a true "Jazz Master." He recorded over 60 albums & appeared on countless more.

Along with his brothers Thad & Elvin "The Jones Brothers" were considered jazz royalty in Michigan. And, we Michigan jazz lovers were proud to clain the trio as our own. Thad, a world famous Trumpeter, composer & Band leader, passed away in 1983. The younger brother Elvin, a mighty mighty drummer & leader of the Elvin Jones Jazz Machine, passed away in 2004.

There's much that could be said about Hank Jones & I'll let other's have their say. For me, I'll just say "Hank was a great musician & I'm so happy that his musical legacy remains." Doc ...

Herbie Hancock Still Going Strong at 70!

I first discovered the music of Herbie Hancock in the 1960's. That discovery came on the heals of the smash 1963 jazz hit "Watermelon Man" released by Mongo Santamaria. I was just a young teenager, but I'd been listening to jazz for several years already. When I learned the the most popular dance tune of the day had been written by a young African American composer, I was extremely excited.

I've followed the music of Herbie Hancock ever since. Just last week, on Blip.fm, I sent out one of my favorites, "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" and I continue to receive props for sharing that song from all over the world. "Maiden Voyage" and "Fat Albert Routunda" are two of my favorite Herbie Hancock recordings.

Other favorite compositions include (Chameleon, Future Shock, Canteloupe Island, & Theieves in the Temple) ... If you're looking to build your library I highly recommend The Complete Blue Note Sixties Session. So Happy Birthday Herbie Hancock, thanks for the many years of great music!

This week I am most pleased to be listening to the latest release from the Houston Person Quintet, "Mellow." The title of the CD says it all. Other phrases that come to mind include "soulfully vibrant" ... "blues tinged & lyrical." Mellow is a blend of soft & mellow tunes with bright & bouncy interpretations of jazz standards. This week I'm enjoying the new release by Havana Carbo, Phantoms of Love. Havana was born in Cuba & raised in the United States. As a singer/composer she performs with a quartet affectionately and unofficially known as "MELAO." Phantoms of love is truly a treat. Multilingual HAVANA glides from language to language without a hitch, as she tells each story. That while the band keeps the groove tight & breathes and speaks the same emotional language along with Havana.

I'm listening to Project Trio. You gotta hear Blue Rondo a la Turk, City of Dreams and Visual Machine. A soft but dynamic wall of sound. Jessy J Scores Again

True Love by Jessy J a Smooth Jazz Show Stopper.

Jazz saxophonist Jessy J was born Jessica Spinella in Portland, Oregon. Growing up in Hemet, California she began playing the piano at age four. At 15, she was named Piano State Champion at the Bela Bartok Festival in California. Later, she switched instruments to the saxophone. This University of Southern California graduate earned a degree in jazz studies. Jessy turned professional, finding work backing Michael Buble in the recording studio and playing in the touring bands for the Temptations, & Jessica Simpson. Her big break came when Producer/guitarist Paul Brown gave her a featured spot in his show in 2006. She signed with Peak Records and released her breakout CD, Tequila Moon in March of 2008. Tequila moon was produced by Paul Brown. The CD topped our smooth jazz charts for six month's and was my pick for recording of the year. Jessy new release, True Love (2009 Concord Jazz) is a more mature sound than Tequila Moon. She continues her collaboration with Paul Brown. I think True Love serves notice to the Jazz World that Jessy J is here to stay. That prospect makes me smile.
